Summoning as a epic black metal band? |

Well, ive been thinking lately about all this evolvment of metal and it seams weird to me that more and more Epic Black Metal band walks over into the overly
electronic area of existing. Few are those who linger on in the blurred and grey dimension of using samplings alltogether and more and more becomes syntezisers
with growls. Me persoanlly have nothing aginst this but what have it really become? A few try to nich out and calls them self Black Ambient or whatever but the
feelings of the music is still overtly black. The more I think of it the less I view Summoning as a black metal band, hell its not even metal anymore but what
is it? Im not complaining, im just confused to whatever or not the instruments are a indicator of what music one play or the style.

Epic Black Metal for me is distinct from Black/Ambient Metal through what keyboard samples it uses and what themes it explores. Epic Black Metal will always be
a somewhat romanticized version of black metal, full of orchestral synths and neo-classical ideas. Ambient Black Metal on the other hand uses synths primarily
for spacey and string sounds, like Darkspace, and focuses more on dark themes. I think the band that ties the two genres. together is Paysage d'Hiver.
Summoning is juts Summoning, dunno what genre haha. |

Yea I know all the nifty definitions but sometimes its just a load of bull if you ask me. I mean sure there are ambient parts to darkspace but more so theres
harsh/powerelectronics and I dont see any Power Electronics Black Metal bands :P

I dont think instruments really name the styles. Its just the music. I think instruments are just what they are called "instruments". Hell, if I had
a magic Orb, which translates my thoughts into music I'll dont think about it another second.
It all evolves and as long as it has the essence, I'm not complaining. |

I dunno MZ 412 could be power electronics black metal. :P
I think every genre does have it's core instruments that indicate what style the music is. |

Epic to me is the feel of the songs and the essence of the album in general. Longer songs naturally feel more "epic" in nature. Opeth and Throne of
Katarsis come to mind, but they themselves have yet to claim any 'epicness' in their respective genre titles.
Thought provoking would be a big plus also, and they get a bit of a helping hand from Tolkien. I never really considered the use or lack of instruments for something to be or not be "epic". I dunno, it's hard to describe. In either case, it begs the question...If, at the end of a record, you don't feel compelled to say "Damn...that was epic as fuck", is it truly epic then, regardless of labeling??

Just as their theme and aesthetic would suggest, I've always imagined Summoning as music from another world - great orc marches and elven compositions using strange instruments. :P The first album was definitely black metal, after that they wandered into uncharted territory (where they continue to dwell alone, as far as I'm concerned).

Ungolianth wrote:It's a style that grew out of black metal. Graveland's later works experiment with the same thing, as Burzum did (without so much keyboard) on middle works. So did Emperor, on In the Nightside Eclipse, although they wanted to be louder. I like the long melodies, lower influence on beats (reminds me of Immortal's 2nd) and epic atmosphere. Summoning fjucking rules. |

one side note; listen to "Attende", a song of 'Mistur' , a band with ex-windir members. That song is epic
