Yeah... Everything from the 70's efforts which still have one foot in blues/prog to the speed/thrash hybrids.

There's an upswing for this trad-metal here in Sweden, and one of the acts is "Helvetets Port" (The Hell Gate) from Gotenburg, they're doing
all they can to try and replicate the early 80's in their image and sound, and even recorded a music video in true vintage fashion to their song
"Lightning Rod Avenger" which kicks ass, even though it's some of the most simple stuff ever made.

Just unearthed a hidden gem of the 80's... A band called Tyrant, hailing from California.
They released two records in their prime, and then went on a hiatus but released a third effort in the mid 90's but then faded into dust... However, they seem to have been persuaded by some german agency to reform and played at "Keep It True" earlier this year. In any case, this kicks major ass in a way that only true metal of the 80's can. It's like... a mix of King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, Manowar and Carnivore, with some spice of other american gems like Jag Panzer and Fates Warning but also some lyrics which can be tied to the doom-circles of Pentagram and Saint Vitus. They had a pretty nice image too... The mullets and everything! Crosses, studs, leather. Oh yeah.

I always liked Mercyful Fate and King Diamond but the rest of the 70`s and 80`s metal clowns can fuck off. Yeap, all of them, with their cheesy imagery,
moronic lyrics and crappy music. I still listen to some old songs, thye have their charm but they are crap.

Running Wild are masters of making catchy unimaginative songs good somehow, the Running Wild-effect.
Too bad they're splitting up after Wacken, would've been fun to see them live sometime. |

And the ultimate trooness: I have posted links to songs that I like or used to like aeons ago. I still listen to Moby Dick`s song
sometimes, "Conquistadores" was a good reson for headbanging in the old times and Ossian`s abomination is a complicated story. I must have heard this
darn songs when I was 14 or so, probably being drunk `cos I never remembered it or thought about it. Two years ago, in quite odd circumstances, drunk and alone
at a table late at night I heard it again. It took me a week to find it but now it`s forevah with me, teh rock is in my heart. Too bad you can`t understand
Hungarian, there are a bunch of bands with lyrics who would put Manowar to shame: ironheart, republic of the long-haired, soldiers of rock...

Taking Over was one of the first albums I ever owned(on cassette of course).
Los Angeles Thrashers Dark Angel were so underrated it's a shame what happened to them. How many up and coming talented bands can actually claim 'poor record sales' as the reason for splitting up during Metal's golden years? Pity. Viewed as a younger and more aggressive Slayer, Dark Angel helped keep L.A.'s thrash scene from going completely to shit(and by shit, I mean hair metal).

Damn... That "Moby Dick" tune is catchy as hell, and funny at that. I enjoy it.

Where the hell are all of you classic metalheads?
I've been to a festival dedicated to all that is true classic metal (and some other stuff too!) over the weekend, it was stellar all way through. Even the ridiculous performance by Thor (of Canada)! The bands were: Wolf, Entombed, Witchcraft, Portrait, Bullet, Ram, Backdraft, Abramis Brama, Graveyard, Thor, Enforcer, Count Raven, The Devil's Blood, Eviscerated, Scams, Solid Ground, Cauldron, Spice And The RJ Band, Antichrist, In Solitude, Axewitch and Helvetets Port. They tried to get Angel Witch to play, but it seems like they couldn't this year, but they're dealing about getting them there for the next festival, which is swell! Other than that, I'm totally sold out on "In Solitude" after their performance, especialy when they played the last two songs of the gig, "Kathedral" and "Witches Sabbath". My central nervous system fucking melted. But "The Devil's Blood", "Witchcraft", "Portrait", "Enforcer", "Count Raven", "Eviscerated", "Antichrist" etc. were other personal favorites, but other bands such as "Wolf" and "Entombed" also delivered some solid stuff, but sadly I've not listened to them all that much so I couldn't get into their gigs. Witness the glory of "In Solitude": |

Not bad at all. I can't say I'm too familiar with most of those bands(except Entombed). Angel Witch was pretty good.
I usually think of other bands when I hear classic or traditional metal. Bands like this one....This song/band nearly single handedly inspired the censorship movement of the 1980's. The culprit was a dizzy broad who over-heard her daughter listen to the LP and went on to create the PMRC. This band needs no formal introduction....

About time I came in here, since I can probably make up for my un-trvness in the Black Metal realm with Heavy Metal, pure and simple! Angel Witch are a mighty
instituition indeed! So far, my favourite track off that debut is "White Witch": Burrrrrrrn the white witch! W.A.S.P.: You can't help loving
Lawless and his gang for their openly-teenage-minded lyrics on the first two albums! That's one of the ingredients that I think adds perfectly to the good
tunes. Quite funny to see that their first Single, self produced "Animal" was turned down by the record deals (I wonder why eheh) In Solitude are a
good band of the revitalising Swedish scene, along with Portrait, Enforcer and Ereb Altor. I don't know what you're on up in Sweden, but man, it's
working! Sadly I can't afford In Solitude's album just yet, it'll have to wait for better financial moments! I'll leave a recommendation of a
band I'm not sure you have heard about, Pagan Altar:

Pagan Altar are legendary... Not sure if I want to count them as trad doom or NWOBHM myself though.

Sventevith wrote:They are neither, in my opinion. Pagan Altar is one of those bands you'll be hard pressed to classify. Volume I is a lot more doomier than the other two, but Mythical & Magical is already, in my opinion, closer to an "epic" feeling Heavy Metal, than doom. What matters is that theser gentlemen, whom I had the opportunity to see live and chat wth a few weeks ago, are a great name to remember! And I failed a bidding on "Angel Witch" just now ![]() I was the highest bidder until some schmuck went in the last second and outbid
me... Shame, it was a low priced LP... and a hell of an album!
