I'm an honorary Californian! : D I lived there for a while in Pasadena, and I'm the lady friend of one, does that count? : \

Hey, this is a death-metal thread!
There's nothing better than Mantas/Death ('til Leprosy) when there comes to 80's death metal. |

Yeah, I know they're in a studio - am a huge fan of theirs, so fucking pissed I missed that gig when they performed the new song, since it was in my home
town.

I see your Death (anus.com has an entire page devoted to making fun of Chuck's cancer because he renounced the Satanic aspects of his music in
later releases...fucking douchebags), and raise you the true grand-daddies of death metal:

IMO, the finest band and album to crawl rotting from the European death metal scene (narrowly edging out Unleashed's "Shadows In the Deep"
and Entombed's "Left Hand Path"). Even cooler, the entire albumis free on their website as a way of saying "fuck you" to their old
label, Necropolis.

No matter what genre they're in, they're superior in every way. <3 Darkthrone <3

The lads in Emperor weren't too shabby, either.

It's good to see so many people here have a healthy interest in death metal. For some dumbass reason, most black metal fans I've known feel that
it's a "one or the other" preference, like black metal is still some kind of statement against the me-too sameness of death (even more ironic
when you consider that, according to the metal archives, there are VASTLY more active black metal bands than death metal bands).
Before I heard my first Darkthrone album in '92, there was only death and thrash, and I still love 'em both. |

Possessed is fucking classic, still, I reckon Mantas/Death to be the first death-metal band! Possessed still got a lot of thrash in their sound, whilst Mantas
was all the way out there.
Demilich is fucking great yeah, the one and only band with guttural vocals like that which I can stand and find interesting - but mostly because of the demented riffs. But if we're speaking Finland here, then there's one release which rule them all, and that is Demigod's demo "Unholy Domain". Nothing from Sweden can ever beat that guitar-sound in crunch and overall ominous feeling: I've discovered a lot of really nice demo/underground-finish Death Metal from the early 90's/late 80's through the youtube channel of the dude who uploaded that clip, http://www.youtube.com/user/XysmicExecration Was when I was going to link that Demigod-song to someone that I went and looked what else he had, and it all rocked my fucking wax out of my ears! |

Another band which only recorded a few tunes that I adore a lot is "Darkified", a death metal band from Sweden with doom-tinges and
Lovecraftian-lyrics that released a demo and an EP.
What get me going the most is how the vocalist's screams just boast of vigorous youth, and that you can still understand the lyrics... He's very much a guy in the vein of mr. Nödtveidt. (Damn, I'll have to post a Dissection-song too, only because) |

Dissection were once, for a very long time, my favorite metal act, nothing could challenge them when I was in that period.
They started out as a really damn old-school death metal suite with their demo "The Grief Prophecy" (with artwork by our beloved Per "Dead" Yngve Ohlin!), with a sound which is actually quite reminiscant of the Finish school of death metal with it's low, slow and plodding sound whilst still retaining a great sense of melody. Later they got more slick, got more money, a better studio, better studio-musicians and got a cleaner sound and turned into a melodic death metal suite with some blacker influences in image. This is the true sense of melodic death to my ears, and not the other west-coast Swedish school of that vein created by At The Gates with their Hardcore-influences. |

Here's some Phoenix Death Metal for you guys. Truly epic stuff. I had the pleasure to see these guys(once again @ The Pound in "The City") and
they were awesome! Andy(The Drummer) was incredible. I could hardly follow his hands.
This is the first song off their 2nd album. This album took 2 years to write and is a concept album of extremely dark tones. A must have. Grabbing the cross, from the wall...here secretions start flowing... Here is the the second song, same album. Just as epic!! Fan made vid. Time for their first and only official vid, off of their newest album "Helping The World To See". Possessed reminds me of Dark Angel in alot of ways. Really good shit!!

That wasn't my thing... at all. I don't know, but it sounds shallow to me. Can't sense any feeling or emotion.
