Newer death metal kinda has the same problem newer black metal does; it emulates the past well, but in the end it feels hollow. There's still a few
bands that interest me, though.

Yattering - rad. I saw an album of theirs in the used section over the weekend, I should have grabbed it.
What bands? Portal is far and away my favorite post-2000 death metal band. Hearing Outre and Seepia for the first time was an utter mindfuck. I'm so seldom surprised by metal anymore, but I got goosebumps when I first heard each of those albums. And that's not even mentioning the Lovecraft worship and utterly bizarre (and I mean fucking bizarre) aesthetic. Lightyears ahead of the curve, IMO. I chose that Origin album as one of my favorite albums of 2008. Book of Black Earth from Seattle play an excellent form of blackened death. And even though they're hardly new bands, Unleashed and Arghoslent both released amazing albums last year. I just noticed I'm not very wordy when I'm stoned. "The main difference between Slayer and

Do any of you immerse yourselves in the east coast death metal scene at all? I'm willing to bet Morbid Angel are a mainstay of here(and everywhere else),
but I mean the other bands, Malevolent Creation, Immolation, Deicide, Incantation, Vital Remains, so on and so forth...???

I dislike East Coast Death metal. There are some bands from here that are not too bad but no death that I can think of. E. may be able to think of some.

Most people don't take well to Portal. They complain that it's just noise and write it off completely, never giving it another chance. I absolutely
love it.
