In my opinion part two is the best of the books, it contains most happenings and its not as finite as the third or as slow starting as #1

I have read the LOTR trilogy, the Silmarillion, the Hobbit, Lost Tales, Melkors Ring, and a few other history of middle earth books. All were very good but I found the Silmarillion hard to get into.

I have read most every book there is-Tolkien's letters to people even
But I am older than most of you and have had more time. That is an advantage for me as far as seeing the characters in LOTR differently from the movie-I had them all fixed in my head long before the movie, although Ian McKellen is now Gandalf in my head for the books too. And I agree that Silmarrilian is a tough read, some parts are excellent though. The annotaed Hobbit is worth reading for the extra stuff at the end, where Tolkien retro fitted a scene in that has Gandalf manipulating the dwarves to take back the mountain as a beggining of a plan to combat Sauron's new rise to power. I'll agree tht TTT is the best of the 3 LOTR books-it has my favorite chapters in it-the uruk hai,the riders of rohan, and the voice of Saruman. |

I have a grammar and a lexicon of the Elves' language. Any of you have tried to speak that? It's bloody difficult

Perhaps Ian Mckellen is stuck in your head as Gandalf becuase he played the role so well. (probably the best performance in the trilogy).

I'll be 41 in July.
but mentally I'm going on 13. even more shocking-I have a son older than some of the people here-he's 20. And in case anyone is curious my user name is a guitarist for an Australian cult rock band called Radio Birdman. |

Yes Gimli, Aragorn, Theoden, Boromir, Saruman etc. all performed their parts really well.

Yeah, but for some reason I didn't like Frodo in the movies.

Maybe the reason is that face he has, Evilbone

I haven't seen that movie, but some trailers. And you're right, the face changes a lot, he looks mad. In LOTR the expression of Frodo's and Legolas' face doesn't change! That's a bit annoying.
